History of the jukebox

In 1889, Louis Glass and William S. Arnold invented the nickel-in-the-slot phonograph in San Francisco. Little did they know, they invented an early precursor to the jukebox, the machine that never fails to conjure up feelings of nostalgia when played in a man cave.

The term “jukebox” was first used in the United States around 1940 to describe automated music-playing devices. The original jukeboxes were large, boxy machines with coin slots and selections of 78 rpm records that customers could play by inserting a coin and making a selection. 

Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, jukeboxes grew in popularity and could be found in bars, diners, dance halls, and other public places. By the 1960s, jukeboxes were manufactured with tube amplifiers and early solid-state transistors, allowing for better sound quality. 

In the 1970s and 1980s, jukeboxes began incorporating digital technology and could store and playback up to 24 records. During this era, jukeboxes also began to feature interactive components such as screens and digital readouts that allowed customers to make selections with the push of a button. By the late 1980s, CDs had replaced vinyl discs in most jukeboxes, allowing for even clearer sound quality and more choices.
