About Cristiano Ronaldo
The title of the ‘best football player in the world’ is often hotly debated, but we all know who the better player is, right? No matter what others may think, no one can dispute the fact that Cristiano Ronaldo is a phenomenal footballer and the object of many young ladies’ lustful dreams.
Cristiano Ronaldo is the most followed person on Facebook, Instagram and the most followed sportsperson on Twitter. Between the years of 2016 to 2017, he held the title of The Highest Paid Athlete in the World according to Forbes magazine, amassing over US $1 billion in his career! He is one of only six sportsmen, and the first footballer in the world to ever achieve this feat.
These financial accomplishments are probably as a result of how profoundly marketable Cristiano Ronaldo has made himself. Cristiano is the face of many consumer products, including video games, electronics, financial services, automotive lubricants, clothing, soft drinks, football boots, sportswear, and much more. His handsome face has also been featured in countless magazines, not only because of his mind-blowing sporting exploits but also to draw in extra sales from his admirers all around the world.
He’s a football legend now but Cristiano was actually born into a poor family in the São Pedro parish of Funchal. Interestingly, his mother was thinking of aborting him before he was born because of how poor their family had been. But thankfully she didn’t do it or else we wouldn’t have been blessed with the football superstar we all know and love today.
Time magazine was sure to include him on their list of the 100 most influential persons in the world in 2014 and ESPN ranked him as the most famous athlete in the world between 2016 to 2019. Is this fame because of his irresistibly handsome face or is it because of all the charitable acts that Cristiano has done since gaining fame?
Did you know that in 2012 Cristiano and his agent helped a 9-year-old boy who had been diagnosed with cancer get specialized treatment for his disease? This little boy was Paco Cabrera Nuhazet Guardia Guillén and sadly, he passed away one year later. Cristiano also helped to show millions of children around the world the dangers of obesity, malaria, HIV, and drug addiction by joining and promoting FIFA’s ’11 for Health’ programme in 2012.
But Cristiano didn’t stop there
In January of 2013, he became a global ambassador for the Save the Children fund and by March of that same year, he was raising awareness for mangrove protection in Indonesia by becoming an ambassador for the Mangrove Care Forum.
By 2014, a close friend of Ronaldo made him aware of the plight of a 10-month old boy named Erik Ortiz Cruz who had been diagnosed with a potentially fatal brain condition known as “cortical dysplasia.” This condition was causing the young boy to have up to thirty seizures per day! Cruz’s family was appealing to Cristiano, asking him if he could donate a few signed memorabilia which they could then auction and raise funds to finance little Erik’s surgery and subsequent treatment.
Upon hearing the story, Cristiano did something unbelievable: he opted to fully fund the little boy’s surgery and any subsequent treatments he would require. The surgery itself cost a whopping €60,000 but Ronaldo didn’t ba
t an eyelash! He financed the preliminary tests, the final operation which removed a part of his brain, and the subsequent treatment that Erik would need for his full recovery.
On the 25th of April 2015, a destructive earthquake hit Nepal, killing 8,964 people and injuring 21,952 others. It was the worst natural disaster to strike the country of Nepal in eighty-one years. Upon hearing this, Cristiano Ronaldo rose to the occasion and donated a whopping £5 million to the relief efforts in Nepal! This magnanimous act led to him being named the most charitable sportsperson in the world in 2015. In the following year, he donated all of his €600,000 Champions League bonus to multiple UN charities.
In 2016, Cristiano Ronaldo also took the time to take some pictures with some disabled fans at the San Siro stadium in Milan after winning the 11th continental crown with Real Madrid. This would seem like an insignificant gesture to many but it did raise quite a lot of awareness to the plight of disabled people all around the world.
A young Portuguese boy named Tomas was sadly diagnosed with neuroblastoma in 2019. He underwent treatment against this life-threatening disease in the same year but by October of the following year, it had relapsed. Ronaldo once again showed his profound generosity by opting to pay for Tomas’ second treatment against the neuroblastoma.
After reading about some of Cristiano’s charitable deeds, we might be tempted to see him only as a philanthropist extraordinaire. But let us not forget the sensational footballer that he really is! To refresh our minds, Let’s take a trip down memory lane and see why many laud Cristiano as the ‘football king’: the greatest football player who ever lived!
His full name is actually Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro and he was born into a Catholic family of six. His father was a part-time kit man and a municipal gardener named José Dinis Aveiro while his mother was a cook named Maria Dolores dos Santos Viveiros da Aveiro. He has two older sisters named Liliana Cátia “Katia and Elma and one older brother named Hugo.
Cristiano played for Andorinha between the years of 1992 to 1995 and spent the following two years with Nacional. At just the tender age of 12 years, he got signed to Sporting CP for £1,500 after spending only 3 days with them on trial. Sporting’s Youth Academy soon discovered him some time after and decided that they had to have him. So before long, he had moved to Alcohete to sign with the team.
Cristiano Ronaldo was a popular student at his school and his ego was growing by the minute. One day he and a teacher got into an altercation and Cristiano threw a chair at him! It was at this moment that Cristiano realized he had to focus solely on his football career and he and his mother decided to do just that! But those great ambitions would be compromised one year later when he was diagnosed with a condition that could potentially decimate his dreams.
Cristiano was diagnosed with Tachycardia, a medical condition that occurs when someone’s heart beats too fast, usually over one hundred beats per minute. This can be life-threatening since a heart that is beating too fast may not pump enough blood to the different parts of the body and their cells may not get enough oxygen. Thankfully, he was able to undergo heart surgery where the many holes in his heart were cauterized into one and he resumed his football training a couple of days after.
Cristiano made his sporting debut in professional football in the year 2003 after catching the attention of then Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson, who signed him for €15 million/£12.2 million. Cristiano then spent the next 6 years at the Manchester United Club where he honed his skills and refined his craft by not only scoring spectacular goals by himself but also by creating impressive chances for his fellow teammates. During this period with Manchester United, Cristiano won many trophies with the team while copping numerous individual trophies of his own.
At the end of this six-year period, Cristiano had the bragging rights of being the world’s most expensive player, after Real Madrid had to pay $131.5 million/€94 million to have him transferred to their team. While at Real Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo’s talent shone even brighter! He helped lead the club to numerous trophies and smashed some of the most important goal-scoring records in their history. He won two Copas del Rey and two La Liga titles with the club and also helped Real Madrid to win all of four UEFA Champions League titles.
By July 2018, Cristiano had made his move to Juventus- an Italian club that opted to pay €100 million to have him transferred. This transfer fee was the highest any Italian club had ever paid for a footballer and the highest fee any football team had ever paid for a player older than 30 years. In his debut season at Juventus, Cristiano won league titles in Italy, Spain, and England too.
August 27, 2021 saw the return of Cristiano Ronaldo to Manchester United. This transfer cost the club £12.85 million, in addition to other miscellaneous terms and conditions. He was given back his #7 shirt and has been impressing everyone with his performance since.
Cristiano is also the captain of the Portuguese National Football Team. He helped the team to qualify and eventually win the Euro 2016. This was the first time the Portuguese team had ever tasted victory in that competition.
