How to Choose the Right Pool Table
Three decisions cover 95% of pool table purchases:
1. Slate or MDF? Slate every time for a permanent home installation. MDF absorbs moisture, warps with Australian climate swings, and develops dead spots. Slate stays flat for decades. Our full slate range starts from under $2,000.
2. What size? A 7ft table needs a minimum room of 4.6m x 3.7m. An 8ft needs 5m x 3.7m. Measure your room, subtract 1.4m from each wall for cue clearance, and pick the largest table that fits. If you're unsure, send us your room dimensions and we'll advise.
3. Drop-pocket or ball-return? Drop-pocket is the premium choice for a dedicated man cave. Ball-return suits high-traffic family setups or anyone who doesn't want to manage ball retrieval manually. Both styles are available in slate.
Common Questions
How much does a pool table cost in Australia?
MDF tables start around $500-$800 but degrade noticeably within a few years in Australian conditions. Slate pool tables start at approximately $1,800-$2,500 for 7ft, rising to $3,500-$6,000+ for 8ft handcrafted. All our prices include professional installation with no hidden fees. The slate table is a once-off purchase. The MDF table gets replaced.
What's the best pool table for an Australian home?
A 7ft or 8ft slate table with a solid hardwood frame. The slate bed handles Australian humidity and temperature changes. A hardwood frame doesn't flex. These are the same specs used in commercial clubs and pubs, built to last 20+ years in a home environment. If the budget allows, go 8ft slate over 7ft MDF every time.
Do you sell CUB branded pool tables?
Yes. A Man & His Cave holds Australia's exclusive CUB licensing agreement for Carlton, Carlton Dry, Victoria Bitter, and Great Northern branded tables. These use the same slate construction as the standard range. They're built to the same spec as a pub table because that's exactly what they are.
Do you offer dining pool tables?
Yes. Our dining pool table range converts from full-size pool table to dining surface in under 60 seconds. The conversion top sits over the playing surface and doesn't compromise the game. Available in 7ft and 8ft. The same slate bed underneath, the same 24-month warranty. A genuine solution for rooms that need to do double duty.
Is professional installation included?
Yes, with every table. Our team comes to your address, assembles the table on-site, levels the slate bed with a precision instrument (not by eye), fits and tensions the cloth, and test-plays the table before leaving. Stair delivery is available as an option at checkout. We don't just drop boxes at your door.
What warranty do the tables come with?
24 months structural warranty on every table, covering the frame, slate bed, and cushion rubber. The industry standard is 12 months. We cover double because the build warrants it. Cloth is a wear item and not covered by warranty, but we can recloth tables after the fact if needed.
