Why Slate Beats MDF Every Time

The playing surface is the entire point of a pool table. Everything else, including legs, pockets, and cloth, is secondary. MDF is compressed wood fibre. It's cheap to manufacture and fine for the first 12-18 months of use, then it starts to absorb moisture. In Australia's climate, with humid summers and dry winters, MDF warps. When a playing surface warps, the bed is no longer level and you'll be compensating on every shot. No amount of re-levelling fixes a warped MDF bed permanently.

Slate doesn't do this. Slate is a naturally dense, non-porous metamorphic rock. It doesn't absorb moisture. It doesn't expand and contract with temperature swings. Honed to a flat surface, it stays flat. That's why every pool table in every pub, every billiard hall, and every serious man cave is slate.

A Man & His Cave has supplied pool tables to 20,000+ Australians. If your budget allows only one upgrade over the entry-level, spend it on slate.

7ft or 8ft: Which Size Is Right for Your Room?

The most common buying mistake is choosing the table first and measuring the room second. Standard cue length is 145cm (57 inches). Add that to both sides and both ends of the table and you have the minimum footprint you need.

7ft table: approximately 213cm x 120cm. Minimum room: 503cm x 410cm. Right for a standard suburban room, garage conversion, or man cave under 5.5m long.

8ft table: approximately 244cm x 137cm. Minimum room: 534cm x 427cm. Tournament size, what you'll find in any serious billiard room or commercial venue. If your space handles it, 8ft is the one to get.

Ceiling height matters too. You need at least 230cm of clear ceiling height to take a normal overhand shot without catching the light fitting. Factor in pendant lights, beams, and low-pitch garage roof lines.

Common Questions

How much does a pool table cost in Australia?

Entry-level MDF tables start around $500-$800 but will warp within a few years in Australian conditions. Quality slate pool tables start at approximately $1,800-$2,500 for a 7ft table, rising to $3,500-$6,000+ for an 8ft handcrafted slate. Professional installation is included in all our prices: there are no hidden delivery or assembly fees. The slate table costs more upfront and lasts decades. The MDF table costs less upfront and gets replaced.

Is a slate pool table worth the extra cost?

For any long-term installation in an Australian home, yes. Slate doesn't warp, doesn't absorb moisture, and doesn't degrade with temperature changes. MDF does all three. The performance difference is immediately obvious the first time you play a run of shots: the ball rolls true and consistent on slate. For a man cave, garage, or games room setup that's built to last, slate is the only choice worth making.

What's the difference between drop-pocket and ball-return tables?

Drop-pocket (traditional) tables have six pockets that drop the ball into a cavity inside the table. You retrieve it manually. Ball-return tables have an internal rail system that channels pocketed balls to a collection tray, separating the cue ball from object balls automatically. Ball-return is better for high-traffic setups with kids or multiple different users. Traditional drop-pocket is the choice for a premium slate table built to last 20+ years in a dedicated man cave.

Can a pool table fit through a standard door?

Yes, they are not brought in as a single assembled unit. Slate tables ship as components (legs, frame sections, slate pieces, cloth, rails) and are built in your room by our installation team (If installation selected). A standard doorway of 82cm+ is sufficient. Very narrow doorways (under 75cm) or spiral staircases may require extra planning, so contact us before ordering if access is tight.

How long does installation take?

A standard ground-floor installation takes 2-3 hours from arrival to a finished, level, playable table. Our teams have installed thousands of tables across Australian homes in every configuration. You don't need to be a tradesperson or have any tools ready. They arrive with everything needed, including precision levelling equipment, and won't leave until the table plays as it should.

Do you deliver and install across Australia?

Yes. We deliver Australia wide. Our employed installation teams service NSW, QLD, VIC, and SA directly. For WA, TAS, and ACT we work with a network of trusted local contractors using the same installation standard. Stairs are available as an option at checkout. Anything more than five steps requires our specialist stair team and a small surcharge, which you'll see at checkout.
