At the 2016 UEFA European Championship, Portugal won the tournament for the first time, following a 1–0 victory after extra-time over the host team, France, in the final played at the Stade de France.
The match was Portugal's first competitive win against France, and gave Portugal their first ever major trophy. The win also qualified Portugal to the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia, marking Portugal's first appearance in the competition, and the first time that three countries from the same confederation will participate in the competition.
