The tournament was won by Australia, who beat Pakistan by 8 wickets in the final at Lord's Cricket Ground in London. Australia had beaten India and Zimbabwe in the "Super 6" preliminary finals before playing one of the most-remembered ODI matches of all time in defeating South Africa in the semi-final.

South Africa had tied Australia after 2 balls of the final over with just 1 wicket in hand when Lance Klusener mis-hit to Mark Waugh at mid off. Klusener sprinted down the pitch while Donald, at the other end, was watching the ball instead of his partner and did not hear the call to run. Waugh threw the ball to Fleming who rolled it along the pitch to Adam Gilchrist standing over the stumps at the batsman's end. Donald (who had dropped his bat) was run out by some distance for a diamond duck. Incredible!
